RBA was commissioned by the Department of Planning and Community Development (Traralgon Office) to undertake a review of the existing heritage-listed places in this remote location, which remains accessible only by boat.
Many of the sites already listed on the Schedule to the Heritage Overlay had deteriorated – other sites had been nominated for heritage protection and required assessment.
29 citations were prepared though 31sites assessed (18 existing heritage overlays and 13 proposed) for the DTPLI (then DPCD) Amendment C4.
The heritage places on French Island reflect the particular geo-historical circumstances which have shaped its development. Significant sites include examples of vernacular construction, redundant chicory kilns, and a former low-security prison, now an eco-resort, providing accommodation for WWOOFers (Willing Workers On Organic Farms Australia).
