Towong Shire, in the north-east corner of Victoria, is an area particularly rich in sites related to squatting, selection and mining, and its relative isolation has brought about a unique history. Many places of historical interest remained unprotected prior to the heritage study commenced by RBA in 2003.
RBA were commissioned by the Shire of Towong to identify and assess significant sites in the area as part of Amendment C28.
Stage One was undertaken during 2003–2004 Stage 1and included a thematic history and survey of 950 sites.
Stage Two undertaken during 2007–2009, included citations for 2 precincts and 87 individual sites. Community consultation was a key part of the process, including working with local history group, to ensure that the values and memories of local residents were represented.
